If you employ a cleaner directly

Paying an individual who works for you, rather than a business that invoices you, usually makes you their employer. The legal minimum is the national minimum wageof €14.15 an hour for adults in 2026, rising to €14.94 from 1 January 2027 asannounced in Budget 2027. On top of pay:

Our guide to tax when you employ a cleaner covers the details.

VAT

Cleaning private homes is charged at the reduced VAT rate of 13.5%by VAT-registered businesses. A services business only has to register once turnover passes€42,500 a year, so many small cleaners do not charge VAT at all. Check whether a quote is VAT inclusive.

Price questions

How much is a cleaner per hour in Ireland?

Advertised rates we checked in October 2026 were about €21 to €28 an hour in Dublin and €16 to €22 an hour elsewhere, usually with a two-hour minimum. Some companies charge more, up to around €35 an hour.

Is VAT included in cleaning prices?

Cleaning private homes carries the reduced VAT rate of 13.5% when the business is VAT registered. Smaller cleaners below the registration threshold do not charge VAT. Ask whether a quote includes VAT.

Is it cheaper to employ a cleaner directly?

Not always. A directly employed cleaner must get at least the minimum wage of €14.15 an hour (rising to €14.94 in January 2027), plus holiday pay and, in most cases, employer PRSI, and you take on employer duties with Revenue.

Why was my quote higher than the advertised price?

Advertised prices are starting points for an average home in reasonable condition. Extra bathrooms, heavy limescale or grease, pets, a long gap since the last clean, travel, and add-ons like ovens, windows or carpets all push quotes up.
